HISTORIA

Dinamismo, espectacularidad y diversión a partes iguales.

For those people alien to the sport that put sense to this web, it’s proper to say that when we speak about skimboarding we are not mentioning these short boards and thin made of wood, to slide on the sea shore; which is the most visible part (usually seen in the summer days used by the children in the beaches), we speak about a modality which mixes surf and skate, due to its combination of maneuvers of both sports. To make it understandable, the skim is surfing in shore brake waves with a small board without fins; which gives to those who practice it more maneuverability and the possibility to male tricks of own creation or adapted from other board sports, as the skateboarding. The difference from the surf is that the skimboarding starts from the shore sea. The sport man, with its board hold with his hands, waits for a good wave to breake on the shore sea standing on the sand, to start running to the wave perpendicular to the sea line getting on the board, sliding on the water to the wave (taking advantage of the speed of the movement), while the wave it’s about to be created and turn it to slide down the wall, with similar surf movements, until finding the barrel that the waves does coming back to the sand, including, if it’s possible, some tricks in the way. This is what it is. It is dynamism, spectacular movements and fun all together.

The first steps were in Laguna Beach, California, where the bay watchers used wood boards to cover big distances sliding on the shore sea, during the sixties; although the real origin of the movement started a few years later, in the seventies, when the shore breaks started to be enjoyed with foam boards and fiberglass. That thing that started by running and sliding against waves to make spectacular aerials when colliding with the wave (without board), evolved in the Victoria beach with whom group of friends, which looked for giving a different purpose to their short wood boards, starting to make short turns on the waves to makes high sprays. They were in charge to make the modern skim make its firsts steps. The interest increased and in the evolution, a few years after the skimboarding born, two of that SKIMBOARDERS, Tex Hayners and Peter Prietto, created Victoria Skimboards as a little company of small-scale handmade skimboards. During the eighties the evolution continued in a good pace, until arriving to the cover of the prestigious USA publication Sports Illustrated, as a decisive point.

In a parallel side, meanwhile, the ZAP brand makes its little contribution on the progress in the U.S east coast. In the nineties, despite the low interest at the beginning of the decade, the path keeps its ascendant trajectory and with the birth of Skimonline and the Skim magazine, the evolutions way of the eighties is taken again. After that, with Exile, Foreverskim, Alley Oop or the UST, the interest and the media impact, supported later by Youtube and thereafter with Facebook, the contact circle and possibilities is much wider from any place.

Until now the evolution has been fast and ascendant. Appear more skimmers and from different countries (Mexico, Japan, Brazil, France, Portugal, Chile, Spain and a lot more…), although California keeps being the most important focus. More webs and blogs born every day, there are a lot of videos, the boards evolve and the riders progress even more. The events improve, ther are newborn brands, the material is day by day more specific, there is more and better spots, clubs, crews, magazines, pictures and a large etcetera about, from GORGOSKIM.com, we would like to get deeper and inform with regularity.

In Spain this keeps progressing radically since the first fiberglass boards appeared in 2004 (as we know) in Andalucia, specifically in Huelva and Cádiz, and nowadays the most important points are in Barcelona, Málaga and the same province of Cádiz, although the activity is increasing also in the coast of Levante and the north coast of the country.

In our country we count with 3 official clubs (Gorgonitas, Faroskim and VooDoo), which organize its respective competitions, two prestigious boards (Dogflut and Dune), crews, blogs and most of all, more skimmers appear day by day enthusiastic and addicted. Because skimborading… is a feber.

We will speak with details in future articles and infinite things.
